Kirinyaga governorship: A battle of heavy weights
Race attracts two former cabinet secretaries
Kirinyaga governorship will be a contest of heavyweights after two former ministry heads declared their interest in the position.
Martha Karua who served as the Justice minister during Kibaki era is among those seeking to unseat Ndathi.
Karua has also vied for presidency but lost, after which she joined opposition CORD to push for ‘Okoa Kenya’ referendum.
She is among the few Mt Kenya leaders who have refused to join Jubilee, but reports indicate that her party will be backing President Uhuru Kenyatta in the August Presidential election.
Former Devolution cabinet secretary Anne Waiguru will also be in the race, which will be a bumber-to-bumber contest with Governor Ndathi.
This is because Waiguru and Ndathi will not only be fighting for the Jubilee nomination ticket, but also votes from Gichugu, which is their home constituency.
Ndathi has initiated some development projects that could win him re-election, but has severed ties with his deputy who according to The Star contributed to his victory in 2013.
