Nairobi was founded in 1989, and became Kenya’s capital in 1899. It was home to British hunters and East Indians who were building the Ugandan railway. It’s original name was Enkare Nyirobi, a Maasai phrase which means “cool waters.”

In the 1900s, it was burnt down but rebuilt later. Machakos was the first capital city of Kenya. It was established in 1887 and was named after an Akamba chief, Masaku wa Munyati. The capital city was moved over the construction of the Uganda railway.
