Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated on this day in 1968. He was killed by James Earl Ray, who fired a shot at him through a bathroom window. Martin Luther, who was standing on a hotel balcony, succumbed moments later at the hospital. He was 39.

On the same day in 1928, Maya Angelou was born in St. Louis, Missouri.
